|Brothers Doug Dillard and Rodney Dillard were born and raised in Salem, Missiouri. While in school, the two began singing and playing bluegrass music. In the early 1960s, the two formed the Dillards with Mitch Jayne and Dean Webb.
Shortly after heading to California in 1962, the group appeared on the "The Andy Griffith Show" as the "Darling Family."
From 1962 to 1965, the group released a few albums of bluegrass music. In 1967, Doug and Rodney played on the soundtrack of the film Bonnie and Clyde. Not long afterwards, Doug left the group to form the Dillard And Clark Expedition with Gene Clark.
During the 1970s, the group released several albums with a varying line-up of group members. During the 1980s, the band's members reunited occasionally.
