John Travolta was born on February 18, 1954, in Englewood, New Jersey.

At 16 years of age, Travolta quit school and began his professional acting career in summer stock and in television commercials. He then moved to California and appeared in small guest parts in episodes of several TV shows.

Travolta then returned to the stage by joining the national touring company of "Grease!" which led to him appearing in the Broadway production of the musical.

After "Grease!" he appeared in the Broadway production "Over Here" which starred the Andrews Sisters.

After almost a year in "Over Here" Travolta returned to California and made his first feature film Devil's Rain.

The Travolta landed the part of "Vinnie Barbarino" in the ABC sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter." The show was a hit and Travolta became a star.

After "Kotter," Travolta starred in the films Carrie, Grease!, and Saturday Night Fever (which earned him an Oscar nomination).

Travolta's career took a downturn after that, but he made a "comeback" begining with Look Who's Talking in the late 1980s. Then Pulp Fiction in 1994 earned him another Best Actor Oscar nomination.

In 1989, Travolta married actress Kelly Preston.
