Daddy's Song

Recorded/Published: 1968
"Daddy's Song" was originally released on the first pressing of Harry Nilsson's Aerial Ballet album. But it was quickly pulled from the album by RCA who feared that it would compete with The Monkees's cover version. Nilsson's version later reappeared on his Aerial Pandemonium Ballet album.

The Monkees performed "Daddy's Song" for their 1968 film Head. It appears on the soundtrack album.

Years ago I knew a man
He was my mother's biggest fan

(4.0 / 4.0)
This is Nilsson back in the same autobiographical territory as in '1941' and producing another masterpiece. His arrangement is somewhat fussier than the that of the Monkees (superb) version but his voice more than compensates and take the song into another dimension. Since having a son of my own, the song has acquired greater meaning and additional emotional clout. This is Nilsson doing what he did best.
